THE FARM

Our farm is located in Poço de Vale in the municipality of Tavira in the Algarve.

It is ideally positioned on top of a hill just 8km from the sea. Our privileged location lets us enjoy stunning views and an ideal climate for olive oil production – long dry, sunny summers and mild, yet relatively wet, winters.

Comprising just 16 hectares, the land supports beautiful vegetation typical of the Mediterranean region, including wild thyme, rosemary and lavender, and lentiscus shrubs as well as the wide canopy of trees.

The farm dates back to 1862 and the old olive press building to 1888.

Back in the time, the farm used to produce everything from olive oil and wine to hay, grain and wheat bread, and there were pigs, cows and varieties of poultry.

The olive mill was used to produce olive oil from the farm’s beautiful and ancient trees, and also to transform neighbors’ olives into liquid gold.

THE PROJECT

Quinta au Monte, in Portugal’s Algarve, is a beautiful Mediterranean farm being brought back to life after decades of neglect and abandonment.

To get this picturesque property back to work, we intend to produce an organic extra virgin olive oil of the highest quality.

Apart from our passion and experience in the world of extra virgin olive oil, there were two particular aspects of the farm that made the prospect of olive oil production especially appealing.

We discovered the old press and majestic millstones that had produced olive oil since the late-19th century.

And then there were the 150 ancient olive trees that were totally neglected, some of astonishing sizes and forms, and several more than a thousand years old.

After we carefully restored the existing olive trees, the land was prepared and some 4,000 new olive trees of different varieties planted in October 2014.

Our production will never be very big – the focus is entirely on quality and sustainability.

In addition to the olive trees, we have 115 majestic carob trees, 20 beautiful holm oaks, 35 almond trees, fig trees and pines all spread around the farm.

The aim is to leave behind a place where the trees can produce excellent olive oil, lovely almonds, abundant carobs and figs from a soil which is able to grow whatever future generations wish.
